Baltimore’s next breakout act? Future Islands’ next album, “On the Water,” hits next week, and with a winning formula of dramatic synths, deep bass and the totally-in-your-face vocals of Samuel Herring (who comes off like Jack Black meets Meatloaf, in a good way), they have a compelling formula already in the mix. Their last album, “In Evening Air,” amped up the dynamics, setting the stage for “Balance,” which most certainly has a danceable beat, but is far more cerebral than your normal indie dance night fare. Diamond Rings fans, give these guys a shot.

Agreed, they have the ingredients for a breakout, but who knows. Breaking out in the indie world can be tough to figure out. (Foster the People, totally understandable. But how is Diamond Rings not bigger?)

Funny how the band Future Islands are compared to here is arguably more obscure than they themselves. Bottom line, both F.I. & D.R. are immensely more talented than they get credit for. They’d be regulars on the Bizarro top 40. /musicsnobbery
